Four decades of parsing the historical record through illustrations, performance, film, sculptures and installations

Published with Museum Folkwang, Essen and Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden.

Spanning more than four decades, Listen to the Echo presents a selection of key works from the oeuvre of South African multidisciplinary artist William Kentridge (born 1955), tracing points of resonance across his far-reaching practice. Featured artworks range from his early prints and drawings that laid the foundation for his animated film series, Drawings for Projection, to recent installations that confront apartheid, colonialism, social upheaval and collective memory. Other standout works in the volume include his panoramic video installation More Sweetly Play the Dance, and his woodcut series Triumphs and Laments--both of which employ the motif of procession as a powerful metaphor for change. The book also highlights the Centre for the Less Good Idea, a Johannesburg-based performance incubation space cofounded by Kentridge and Bronwyn Lace that adheres to Kentridge's experimental and open-ended approach to making.
