To Speak of Grasses is a 2025 collection of poetry by Australian poet Kathryn Fry, following previous collections published by Ginninderra Press: Green Point Bearings (2018) and The Earth Will Outshine Us (2021).
To Speak of Grasses concerns itself, through the extensive use of imagery, with the realms of nature, music, art and the emotional landscape of close relationships, some spanning several decades.
The three sections are:
'Suspended': as poems of witness mainly to the natural world in places on the west and east of this country;
'In the Company of Lovers' which has poems about music, art and current, close personal relationships;
and 'Walking Each Other' with its emphasis on the legacy of past experiences.
(Jenny Blackford)
Kathryn Fry's poems in To Speak of Grasses combine admirable precision with equally impressive lyricism. Her clear, loving descriptions of the natural world are carefully scientific as well as poetic. Plants, landscape, animals, her family and others are treated with the same close observation and love.
