Betty Ritz Rogers' chapbook Reclaimed Lumber began as a remembrance and celebration of some of the strong women, refugees from the civil wars in Liberia, whom the writer came to know in her work as a public health nurse. The work grew and changed to become a web of discovery and connection-about the writer herself and her own whiteness, about our country's history, about slavery and the economics of cotton, about Liberia, about art and the entanglements with colonization, about the shared burden of the past and how it weighs on our present-but also about moments of hope and joy growing out of transcendent courage and spontaneous kindness.
