Modern power systems are getting increasingly complex, due to increasing shares of intermittent renewable energy and distributed generation. Research requires computer simulation and modelling, and knowledge of methods and algorithms.

This book presents the main concepts of modelling and simulation of power systems and of their use for simulation-based design purposes. The book introduces the two main families of techniques for computer-based simulation of dynamic systems, and methods that allow parallel simulation execution. A review of different techniques for simulation under uncertainty is then provided. The importance, role and use of simulation and specification languages are presented. Concepts of phasor simulation, modelling and simulation of switching devices, and hardware-in-the-loop are covered, along with illustrated examples and exercises. Also offered is a set of simulation solvers implemented in C++, Matlab(R) and Python.
