Hiraeth [hirˌīTH] is a Welsh word that has no direct English translation. It likens it to a homesickness blended with grief and sadness over the lost or departed, especially in the context of Welsh culture. The Etymology breaks down to 'hir' and '-aeth'. (Closest equivalent to English would be 'longing'.)In Etymology, 'hir' means 'long' + 'aeth' means 'pain, grief, sorrow, and longing'. Hiraeth is a homesickness and deep yearning for places and feelings from your past that you can't return to or even those places and feelings you've never been to or experienced. Hiraeth can also mean nostalgia for your past self, the people who are long gone, or the emotions you used to feel. It is a mixture of emotions like longing, yearning, wistfulness, nostalgia, or a sincere desire for what never existed or no longer does.
These pages are filled with so many emotional moments of my life, of me. It's fascinating...how years later, after finally finding myself...These pages finally make sense.
