Thomas Hardy (1840 - 1928) was an English novelist and poet. He was heavily influenced by Romanticism, particularly the work of William Wordsworth. He deeply disliked much of Victorian society, but in his writing concentrated on the idea of a decaying rural society. Although most famous for his novels, Hardy always considered himself a poet first and foremost. Other notable works by this author include: "Far from the Madding Crowd" (1874), "The Return of the Native" (1878), and "The Mayor of Casterbridge" (1886).
